iMessage vs SMS and RCS for application messaging

Compare reach, recipient capabilities, delivery evidence and routing behavior when adding customer messaging to an application. Channel choice alone does not guarantee a reply.

How to choose

Reviewed . Current product facts

SMS provides carrier-based messaging; iMessage and RCS can add richer interaction where the sender and recipient support it. A business conversation can work on any of these channels. Bubble color alone does not prove trust, conversion or response-rate improvement.

Verify actual line and recipient capabilities before sending. Do not promise a named business identity, a read receipt or a payment flow merely because a device supports iMessage.

ChannelCurrent Comms behavior
iMessageSupported line and recipientRich messaging capabilities vary by line and recipient. Not Apple Messages for Business.
RCSSupported dedicated line, carrier enablement, compatible recipientPlain text to one E.164 number. Check line and recipient capabilities.
SMSSMS-capable line and supported destinationCarrier messaging. No read receipts; regional registration requirements may apply.
AutoEligible routes for the selected line and contentAuto routing selects an available channel for the sending line and recipient, moving to another channel only after a confirmed pre-send rejection. RCS fallback supports plain text. An uncertain result does not trigger another send. An explicit channel never falls back.

Fallback

Auto routing selects an available channel for the sending line and recipient, moving to another channel only after a confirmed pre-send rejection. RCS fallback supports plain text. An uncertain result does not trigger another send. An explicit channel never falls back.

RCS requires a supported dedicated line, carrier enablement, and a compatible recipient. Sending currently supports one plain-text message to an E.164 phone number.

Delivery and read receipts

Acceptance is not delivery. Delivery and read events depend on the channel, line, recipient, and available receipts. SMS does not provide read receipts.

Track request acceptance, provider status, inbound replies and business outcomes separately, and compare channels on your own test cohort.

Checkout

Payment requests use checkout links only when the global Payments product and workspace payments are enabled and merchant requirements are met. Native in-thread Apple Pay is coming soon; checkout links are not native Apple Pay in Messages.

Today a checkout link is sent in the message and opens the store’s checkout.

Architecture

Persist conversation and message identifiers, scope access by tenant and resolve inbound events before executing business logic. Maintain opt-out state and human ownership in the backend. Test unsupported recipients and uncertain sends as well as the successful conversation.
